Syncreon
The Opportunity
syncreon was eager to avail of the cost and CO2 reductions available through upgrading their 180,000 square feet warehouse in Niederaula, Germany to LED lighting.
Germany has the 2nd highest cost per kilowatt hour (kWh) in Europe, resulting in significant energy spend on the older lighting system. Higher energy consumption was also having a significant environmental impact.
Upgrading a warehouse of such scale to LED lighting would incur significant capital expense. Syncreon sought an innovative and scalable solution that would allow it to reap the benefits of upgrading to LED, without capital expenditure on a depreciating asset. The project of upgrading 1,200 lights would also have to avoid disruption to site operations.
UrbanVolt’s Light as a Service was the answer.
The Process
UrbanVolt remotely gathered the site data and presented a business case. This included the lighting design, recommendations around the introduction of sensors (which delivered an additional 10% in energy savings in this case), and a forecast of the cash and environmental impact.
Prior to the installation, UrbanVolt visited the Niederaula site and created a 3D print of the light bracket to manufacture custom fittings for the warehouse. This resulted in a quicker, smoother installation.
Measurement and Verification (M+V) equipment was installed to measure the existing energy consumption of the warehouse. Lux level readings recorded existing light levels, giving syncreon tangible data to quantify the success of the project.
UrbanVolt project managed the retrofit of the entire premises with investment-grade LED lighting. The installation team worked at night and weekends to minimize disruption.
In two weeks, 1,187 fittings were replaced with 797 custom-made LED light fittings.
UrbanVolt took care of every aspect of the project from start to finish, enabling Syncreon employees to focus on what matters most: their core business.
“To be honest, I didn’t really notice UrbanVolt working here on site. They were very flexible with their working times.”
Jan Laskowski, Niederaula Site Manager
The Results
Syncreon Niederaula now has significantly improved light levels, with staff enjoying brighter and safer workspaces.
Forklift drivers can easily navigate the aisles and operate hand scanners, boosting productivity on site.
Check out these before and after pictures to see the difference for yourself. The UrbanVolt LED upgrade of the Syncreon Niederaula facility has resulted in an almost 70% reduction in their lighting energy spend, releasing cash flow which can be invested in other areas of the business.
Most importantly, Syncreon has reduced its energy consumption by close to 70%, a hugely positive impact on the environment.
The Benefits
By upgrading their warehouse to LED, Syncreon Niederaula have reduced their energy consumption from 655,098 kWh annually, to 212,187 kWh. As you pay for every kilowatt you consume, this almost 70% reduction is great news for Syncreon’s bottom line, future-proofing their business against Germany’s high electricity rates.
Furthermore, it’s great news for the planet. The annual CO2 reduction achieved by upgrading just one Syncreon warehouse to LED lighting is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 370 acres or 150 hectares of mature forest in one year.
