An Irish company that makes money by cutting its clients' lighting bills aims to make it easier for businesses to save with the launch of a new online calculator.

Energy start-up UrbanVolt said that the tool allows its customers to calculate a quote for an LED lighting upgrade, complete with potential savings details and CO2 emissions reductions, in less than a minute.

The Dublin-based company, which markets itself with the tagline "Light as a Service",  funds, fits and maintains LED lighting solutions for large commercial properties.

The objective of the upgrade is to enable companies to save up to 75pc on their lighting costs, with a portion of the energy saving then paid to UrbanVolt as a service charge for the first five years.

UrbanVolt was founded in 2015 by former Merrill Lynch corporate financier Kevin Maughan together with business partners Graham Deane and Declan Barrett who previously owned and ran facilities management business Complete Property Management.

The new calculator, which went live on December 21, has generated a significant amount of interest, with a 36pc increase in new users.

CEO Maughan said that the most important thing for UrbanVolt's customers is the ease with which they can access accurate information on what a lighting upgrade looks like.

"Chief Financial Officers don’t want a sales pitch. They want to see figures and a detailed breakdown of the savings they will make by upgrading to LED," he said.

"That’s what our calculator gives them without the hassle and cost of traditional type surveys."

In December, UrbanVolt won Google's latest ‘Adopt a Startup’ competition, making the development of the calculator one of its key goals as part of the competition.

The company is continuing its expansion into overseas markets, with plans to recruit 100 new employees in the US over the next three years.
